Infection and immunity
The Master’s programme Infection and Immunity is a selective two-year research Master’s at Utrecht University, aimed at training the next generation of scientists in the field of human health. The programme provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation in both infectious diseases and immunology, integrating fundamental research with clinical relevance.
Students develop in-depth knowledge of host–pathogen interactions, immune system function, and the molecular mechanisms underlying disease. Particular emphasis is placed on translating this knowledge into innovative approaches for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious and immune-mediated disorders.
A central component of the programme is its strong research focus. Students gain extensive hands-on experience through major research projects within leading research groups, including those at the University Medical Center Utrecht. In addition, the curriculum offers flexibility, allowing students to tailor their academic path to their individual interests and career goals.
The programme is embedded within the Graduate School of Life Sciences, fostering a multidisciplinary environment in which biology, medicine, and related fields converge. This setting enables students to contribute to cutting-edge research addressing global health challenges.
The I&I Master Symposium is a natural extension of this research-driven programme. It provides second-year students with the opportunity to present the research they have conducted during their Master’s internships, share their findings with peers and professionals, and engage in scientific discussion. In this way, the symposium not only highlights the breadth and impact of student research, but also reflects the programme’s core mission: to understand disease and drive innovation in human health.
